Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are officially known as Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a set of 17goals, 169 targets and indicators that UN member states are expected to use to frame their agendas and political over the next 13years. The SDGs follow and expand on the Millennium Development Goals.


KYC’s commitment towards the achievement of the UN SDGs

KYC is one of the 604 organisations that signed the Lyon Declaration on Access to Information and Development in 2015 where the United Nations Member States made an international commitment through the post-2015 development agenda to ensure that everyone has access to, and is able to understand, use and share the information that is necessary to promote sustainable development and democratic societies.

Libraries have been cited as one of the channels through which information can be provided to communities to improve people’s lives. Improving lives is the core business of KYC, a commitment that has been pursued for over 15 years. At KYC, we commit ourselves to increasing access to information to our target groups while bearing in mind its relevancy for their personal development.

KYC contributes to the SDGs within our work with a focus on;
SDG3 “Good Health and wellbeing” Ensure healthy lives and promote well being for all through; Providing free health checkups such as breast and cervical cancer screening, HIV/AIDs Voluntary Testing and Counseling, Family planning services, and information sharing on Sexual Reproductive Health in partnership with community health centres.
SDG4 “Quality Education” Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning for all through; A Station library with academic book bank, e-resources, reading space Mobile library service providing information material to 26 schools Teacher training workshops in effective library management and ICTs Facilitating reading sessions in classes to promote reading and improve literacy Teaching SDGs through classroom collaborations Avail youth with scholarships and other education opportunities available globally
SDG8 “Decent Work and Economic growth” Promote sustained inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all through; Financial literacy and Entrepreneurship skills training Facilitate Empowerment dialogues on employment
SDG13 “Climate action” Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact through; Facilitate classroom sessions and community dialogues to promote reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.
SDG16 “Peace, justice and strong institution” Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development through; Organizing and facilitating peace building activities Participating in peace activities in partnership with likeminded organizations
SDG17 “Partnerships for the goals” Strengthen the means of implementation Partners in development include: Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Plan International Uganda, Mirembe foundation, Omprakash, Beyond Access, Biblionef, Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Youth, Sing Me A Story (SMAS). Being an information centre, KYC is actively engaged in;
i) Raising awareness about SDGs within the local communities to improve stakeholders’ understanding and recognition of the value of the global goals for sustainable development.
ii) Empowering stakeholders through SDSN Youth Campaigns to enable them participate in transforming their communities.
iii) Translating SDG materials in atleast 5 Ugandan local languages to enable communities understand and Own the SDGs and to encourage dialogue for sustainable development.
